I’m Getting International Recognition – Skales

I’m Getting International Recognition – Skales

We recently sat down for a chat with fast-rising star, Skales. The Mukulu singer, who was first launched on the public stage on the back of the Banky W and Segun Demuren-helmed EME Records, talks about his music and life after leaving EME.

His exit from EME in 2014 followed the expiration of his contract and at first appeared to be without controversy. But earlier this year, Skales was embroiled in a Twitter battle with ex-EME label mate, Wizkid.

Skales accused Wizkid of not doing him any favours post EME, while Wizkid counter accused the Shake Body singer of failing to pull his weight while at EME which led to his contract not being renewed.

But these days, Skales claims things are fine between him and his former label mates.

‘Wiz and I are cool. We keep in touch and all. Nothing special, nothing unusual. [As for] Banky, we spoke a few days ago, maybe like a week or now or more. I don’t regret whatever happened back there, it was a great time. I’m glad we’ve all moved on with our different businesses.’

Skales acknowledges the platform that EME provided for him at the beginning of his career.

‘EME is great, they did a lot for me. They gave me the opportunity nobody else gave me. They gave me a platform to ride on. Big ups to them. But I’m on something new as we speak, I’m signed to Baseline and making music and growing my name is really what matters to me right now.’

It is however thanks to Baseline Records that Skales has launched his latest album, Man of the Year, which has the hit single, Shake Body.

‘Man Of The Year is a great piece of work,’ he says. ‘And you see, if I could redo the album I ‘d probably put out lesser songs on it. But then there are no regrets, cuz it’s been a long time coming. And I just felt the urge to put out as much materials on it as I could. I‘d rate the album 10/10 if I was to.’

Also on the album is the single, Always feat Davido. Talking about collaborations, Skales says he is not unrelenting on his drive to get “out there.”

‘The music is getting international. We are getting more recognition by the day. I got Rico Love buzzing me, and we keep in touch every other time. One of the dudes at Maroon 5 is also on my radar and we are pretty cool and talk now and then. Even Nico as well. These are great guys any day and a project with them isn’t out of place. Soon. ’

He gives us an insight into some of his future plans.

‘I’m not resting. There are plans to tour Africa as well North America in the coming months, and there’d be a couple other names on the roster with me as I travel. You guys be on the lookout.’

Skales used to be signed to EME Records but was left out a few years ago following what he termed a ‘mutual agreement’.
