THE Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities have
condemned the recent kidnapping of a serving Vice
Chancellor, Professor Rosemund Osahogulu of the
Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port
Harcourt.
They also called on President Muhammadu Buhari
to act quick in ordering relevant security agents to
ensure safe release of their abducted colleague.
The VCs under the auspices of the Association of
Vice-chancellors of Nigerian (Federal, State and
Private) Universities, made the call in a statement,
at the weekend.
The statement signed by the Secretary General of
the Association, Professor Michael Faborode,
described the abduction of the vice chancellor as
worrisome.
Foborode said the kidnapping of Osahogulu was
more worrisome because his whereabouts had not
been established.
The statement read in part: “The Association of
Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian (Federal, State and
Private) Universities, hereby condemns in very
strong terms, the recent kidnapping of serving Vice
Chancellor, Professor Rosemund Osahogulu of the
Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port
Harcourt.
“What has made the kidnapping worrisome is the
fact that since he was abducted, there had been
neither contact nor news about his whereabouts.
“Considering his age and state of health at the time
of the incident, we call on Mr President and
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the
Governor of Rivers State and all the relevant
security agents to, as a matter of urgency, take
necessary action to ensure the safe release of our
colleague.
“We also call on these ‘evil doers’ who have
suddenly taken interest in unleashing terror on
innocent and harmless heads of our institutions and
other members of the academia to desist from
these deadly and dastardly acts and have a change
of heart.”
